Professor of management at Assumption College, in Worcester, Massachusetts. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an MBA at the Cass School of Business, City University, London. She has had expatriate assignments in Germany, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Korea. Her interests include the role of culture in international business and the pedagogy of international management. Her publications include The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management. Vol. VI: International Management, 2nd ed., Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing (2005); and The Blackwell Handbook of Global Management, Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishing (2004). Her teaching, research and presentations have received many awards, including The Roethlisberger Best Paper of the Year Award from the Journal of Management Education and the Alpha Phi Alpha Teacher of the Year Award. Her articles have been included in journals and collections focused on teaching in the area of international business. She is an avid master rower and enjoys running, reading, and gardening.

Professor of strategy and international management at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. He earned a BS in business at Indiana University and MBA and PhD degrees at the University of Washington. He has authored or edited 14 books and monographs, over 110 published papers, and over 35 case studies; he serves on the editorial boards of several leading international academic journals; he served as the Saastamoinen Foundation Chair at the Helsinki School of Economics in Finland; he was the founding chair of the Strategic Alliances Committee of the Licensing Executives Society; he served as the chair of both the International Business and the Strategy and Policy divisions of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada; and he is past chairperson of the Academy of Management’s International Management division. His research has appeared in the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of International Management, Columbia Journal of World Business, Management International Review, Journal of Management Studies, Human Resource Management Journal, Long Range Planning, Organisation Studies, and Journal of Applied Psychology, among others. He has received 11 “best paper” awards for his research, including the Decade Award for most influential article from the Journal of International Business Studies. His teaching performance has earned numerous awards in the United States, Canada, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe, including the University Distinguished Teacher Award. I don't know exactly what I should do to light whatever interior scene I'm working on, and I scramble to try to be interesting, but usually my scenes are either boring or weird. I need more experience. Waitzkin's name may sound familiar—back in 1993, his father wrote about Josh's early years as a chess prodigy in Searching for Bobby Fischer. Now 31, Waitzkin revisits that story from his own perspective and reveals how the fame that followed the movie based on his father's book became one of several obstacles to his further development as a chess master. He turned to tai chi to learn how to relax and feel comfortable in his body, but then his instructor suggested a more competitive form of the discipline called "push hands." Once again, he proved a quick study, and has earned more than a dozen championships in tournament play. Using examples from both his chess and martial arts backgrounds, Waitzkin draws out a series of principles for improving performance in any field. Chapter headings like "Making Smaller Circles" have a kung fu flair, but the themes are elaborated in a practical manner that enhances their universality. Waitzkin's engaging voice and his openness about the limitations he recognized within himself make him a welcome teacher. Waitzkin, a champion in chess and martial arts, brings enthusiasm and obvious love of learning to this amazing look at what he aptly descibes as the art of learning. He begins by recounting his own quirky journey. At the age of six, Waitzkin learned chess from a motley crew of street hustlers, gamblers, junkies, and artists. Since then, he has been among the highest-ranked chess players. He recounts the distractions of adolescence as well as fame after the publication of his father's book and, later, the film based on it, Searching for Bobby Fischer. He later discovered that chess principles could be applied to learning tai chi. Fawaz Gerges has produced another masterful study, this time on the conflicted relationship between the Nasserist regimes and the Muslim Brotherhood. Based on numerous interviews and original sources, Gerges weaves together a contest between two powerful political entities that has been won, at least temporarily, by Egypt’s latest Nasserist, President al-Sisi. Gerges carefully elaborates on the reasons why, including the Brotherhood’s failure to move out of the shadow of its leading theoretician Said Qutb. Gerges has written a fine book that should be essential reading for those who want a comprehensive understanding of Egyptian politics.

This about the struggle between Nationalism and Islamism in Egypt during the 1950s. It’s minimally informative on relations to events in the ME after the Arab Spring revolts or how the rebirth of jihadism culminated in the 9/11 attacks and the war on terrorism. It’s a detailed history of Egypt in the 1950s, featuring the conflict between Gamil Abdul Nasser and Sayyid Qutb, executed and currently revered as a martyr by the Muslim Brotherhood, and invoked as justification for the current spate of Islamic violence. The detail on a plethora of unfamiliar players interspersed with those from the 1920s and 2011 makes sections of the book all but unreadable. There is little on the role of the more moderate, once popular, Wafd party. Likewise on the Copts countering the Ikhwan prior to the slow death of liberalism in Egypt.The book is limited to Egypt, the most populous Arab country, but now a shadow of its former self, not dominant in the near-east, where Saudi Arabia and Iran contend for the balance of power. It starts with the overthrow of King Farouk in 1952, last member of the Dynasty of Mohammad Ali, by Nasser, who’s goal was pan-Arabism under Egyptian leadership. As Egyptians became disillusioned with Nasser’s brand of national socialism, he was able to substitute anti Zionism after the 1956 Suez crisis until his death in 1970.With an interlude of Ikhwan dominance in the 1980s and 90s, Gerges narrates the continuance under Sadat, who swore loyalty to Banna, followed by Mbarek and the brief interlude of Ikhwan rule under Mohammad Morsi, who failed to improve economic conditions. Currently we have General Abdel el-Sisi, who suppresses the Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan) with another militaristic regime, somewhat reflective of Nasser.Gerges believes the current dominance of the military regime under Sisi is not the last word. His goal of dismantling the social infrastructure will fail because the Muslim Brotherhood is embedded in Egyptian culture. The Ikhwan is likely to recover from its many mistakes, primarily a belief in its own military power over that of the state.

The book covers the struggle between secularism and religion largely in the modern period and largely in Egypt. The title is somewhat misleading unless you are of the standard opinion that as Egyptian Islam goes so goes the Arab world. Other than that it is a detailed study of the modern conflict between secular/nationalism and religious ideological struggles for power in modern Egypt based on bios of Sayyid Qutb and Gamel Nasser - in that it is an enlightening piece of work depicting the fractured nature of both the Free Officer's movement that Nasser headed and the Ikwan or Muslim Brotherhood. If you want a wider study of the struggles of Arab/Asian Muslim peoples, both secular and religious, against the tides of Western secular capitalism you should read Crusade and Jihad by Polk or From the Ruins of Empire by Mishra.
